Things to do in SA: San Antonio’s Official 4th of July Celebration

Keep Pets Safe This Fourth of July

Before heading out to celebrate, don't forget about your four-legged family members. Fireworks may be fun for people, but they can be frightening—and even dangerous—for pets. Loud noises and bright flashes can cause anxiety, leading some animals to panic and run away. In fact, more pets go missing around the Fourth of July than any other time of year.
  • Keep pets indoors. Bring them inside before fireworks begin and create a quiet, comfortable room with the TV, radio, or a fan on to help drown out the noise.
  • Check ID tags and microchips. Make sure your pet's collar has current contact information and that their microchip registration is up to date, just in case they get loose.
  • Exercise early. A walk or play session before the festivities can help burn off energy and reduce stress later in the evening.
  • Never bring pets to fireworks displays. Even well-behaved pets can become startled by loud explosions and crowds.
  • Avoid sharing holiday treats. Keep pets away from alcohol, chocolate, onions, grapes, corn cobs, and fatty barbecue foods that can make them sick.
  • Store fireworks safely. Fireworks, sparklers, and glow sticks can all be harmful if chewed or swallowed.
  • Talk to your veterinarian. If your pet has severe anxiety during fireworks, ask your vet about calming supplements, anxiety wraps, or prescription medications before the holiday arrives.

A little planning can make a big difference. By keeping your pets safe and comfortable, everyone in the family—including your furry friends—can enjoy a happy and stress-free Independence Day.
